Where do I even begin? Kenya has been such a different experience than Uganda. Kenya, Satiman in particular, has challenged me. Being in the middle of nowhere has stretched me physically and mentally.
Physical challenges were the most obvious. We had to be so careful with our drinking water. We had to ration it out so we would have enough for the entire time. We had a small selection of food, which isn’t “normal” for us. It was scorching hot during the day and freezing cold at night. We had to kill large insects that would creep into our tents. We had to push ourselves. The funny thing, though, is that this is absolutely normal for the Masaai people. While I was crying on the inside about having to use a bush as my bathroom, the people who lived in Satiman were living their normal lives. They were happy. They had joy. They welcomed us into their homes with pride and compassion.
On the first day in Satiman, Uganda, Angie and I were shown some huts. While I compared the huts to my home, these people were so proud and thankful for where they lived. They worked so hard to create a safe home for their families. While I am concerned with the size or condition of a home, Masaai women my age are so thankful to HAVE a home. God truly stepped on my toes in Kenya! He is showing me that HE is the most important. Even when I am physically or mentally uncomfortable, He is still worthy to be praised. Even when I am in the middle of the desert without an abundance of water, HE is worthy to be praised. Even in the middle of a spiritual battle, HE is worthy to be praised! He is God! What else do I need?!
The relationships in Kenya were so deep. So many people I truly love will be living their lives in the bush while I am going back to America. I miss them already, but I know we will see each other in heaven! Here are some random pictures from our time in the bush! <3
carrying wood the masaai way! 🙂
precious masaai boy. <3
This is James and Kashini! They were our camel guides when we hiked 30 MILES into the bush! They couldn’t speak English, but we had such an awesome friendship. The entire team definitely cried when they had to leave us. LOVE THEM!
After chasing a herd of wild donkies…we were a little crazy..
