There’s a lot of serious moments in mission work, moments where you share the truth in dark places, moments when you your hardest and moments where you are still and seek God’s face, but in between those moments God shares his joy and love in ways that are just as real and just as important. Some of those have been incredibly funny so I thought I’d share:
1. A sermon about temptation can immediately become a Sex-Ed course, even in the middle of Sunday morning church. I won’t go into too much detail, but this has happened twice. Once on Fathers day and once at a campus ministry night….some interesting quotations from the ordeals: “Ladies, if a man asks for a sample before you have a ring tell him ‘What you you think I am? A piece of beef?'” and “You are not the only flower in the flower garden” along with many, many others.
2. A kid got clotheslined playing Red Rover. At my suggestion we played Red Rover with the kids at recess. It was going great and everyone was loving it until poor little Windel had his name called. At the prompting of some of the boys he took of sprinting as fast as his little legs could carry him while they cheered him on, “Faster windel, faster! Break their hands!” He was going strong then right at the last second the girls he was running between raised their arms to neck level. He was going so fast his head hit first and his legs flew out from under him. The whole team immediately burst out laughing, it was so funny and he was fine just a little shaken up. No more red rover in Africa.
3. I got charged by a goat in Ruti. The people in the village let their goats and cows run free so they’re all over the place. I saw a baby laying all alone so I picked it up and it started baaing or whatever goats do. It’s mom then ran out from behind the bush and charged me and I had to drop the baby and run. Never touching a goat again.
More to come…..many, many more to come 🙂
In the meantime, we are in Bungoma, Kenya and I love it here. The people are seeking and waiting anxiously and God has brought us in for harvest and to encourage and uplift those who already believe. Somedays we get to eat grilled cheese and popcorn for breakfast, and we have a real toilet. It truly is the small things 🙂 God is teaching me how to worship him with every breath, and the joy this brings me is incredible. I’m so at peace here in his love and am so excited for the ministry here but excited to take what I’ve learned back to America and be more bold in my faith and just live in his love. The blessings he has showered over us are incredible, and being here just makes that so much more evident.
