the gate.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that my favourite type of ministry is always anything to do with kids.

We have been in Zomba for about a week and I have fallen in love with Malawi. This place is incredible. The simplicity of life, the beautiful scenery, mountains and lush greenery takes my breath away, every day. Pastor Gama and his wife, Mama Rose have taken us in and treat us like family. We are so blessed.

Although we haven’t been doing as much ministry as we had expected, our “down” time has brought my favourite moments, what I refer to as “gate ministry.”

The house we are living in is gated, and outside the gate is a road with a field in front. Ever since my first day here, I have spent most of my time out there. It’s a funny thing, to open the gate, step outside and see a swarm of African children run towards you, shouting “Azungu!!” But the best part? Now they run and shout “Bekah!!”

I have loved spending time with them. Singing, dancing, doing cartwheels and other tricks, piggyback rides, giving high fives, learning Chichewa from the older boys, (mostly them laughing at my poor pronunciation, ha!) walking to the market for a soda and some biscuits, and even playing football with a busted rubber ball.

The simplest form of love.

Kids are easy to love. It is easy to give them a hug, tell them “Di way okongola” (You are beautiful) and smile at them. The smiles and cheers they give us when they see us walk outside the gate, or coming to and from the market, these are things I will never forget.

These sweet faces have stolen my heart.  Although it may not be what we had expected, not the door to door or crusades we had thought would occupy our days; I would not trade these sweet and simple moments for anything.
