I am more than a CONQUEROR

All my life I’ve been striving to be the “perfect” person.  I always tried hard in my studies (okay maybe not maths), I was always saying the “right” words or doing the “right things”, I was always trying to find ways to be seen as “the good child”. When I was little I would be good so my parents would reward me. Yes they loved me unconditionally but I still sought after the recognition and rewards of being the “good one” to get that extra lolly or treat. There is nothing wrong with seeking to be your best –...

No shoes but a smile on her face.

First day at the care point. My heart was broken in more ways than it ever has been or I ever thought possible. Some of these kids only see love with the few hours that they are there during the day. Some kids only receive one meal the whole day and that is there. One girl caught my eye on that first day. I tried to get her to play but she just wanted to sit on my lap. Just to feel loved. She had no shoes on. Her feet were all infected. I asked one of the Gogos about her. She said that she has a twin. The father passed away from HIV. The mother has no job. The care point meal is the only...

The Eyes of Men

Mud covered roads, and exhaust pouring into our lungs. This is the Manzini bus stop. A chaotic mass of people surround me. All eyes on “The Americans”. My team moved through the dense crowd.  The locals stopped what they were doing to stare at us. They pointed and laughed at us. They would push and shove us as we walked past. Men, with lustful eyes scanned my body. If I even slightly looked at these men in the eyes, they would spit vulgarities at me. They would scream, “I want you!” and reach out to touch me. Others would ask, “How much for this beautiful...

Show the Jesus Film, preach the gospel, and heal the sick.

Last month in Mozambique we stayed with a pastor named Filito Utuie. He was a man who was clearly anointed by God and Filito was blessed with many spiritual gifts. He told us a story of when he went to a Muslim village in northern Mozambique and wanted to share the love of Jesus there. He told the chief of the village he wanted to show the Jesus film, preach the gospel, and heal the sick. The chief didn’t care too much for the first two things he said, but once Filito said “heal the sick”, the chiefs eyes got a little bit wider. After the film and a powerful message, the...

Oranges and Community

I was eating an orange outside in Mozambique, while two little girls were playing around me and I felt like I should give them some. I handed one little girl a piece and she immediately walked over to her friend and motioned for me to give her a piece, because if she got a piece and her friend didn’t that just wouldn’t be fair. This little girl who has nothing to call her own, and who probably doesn’t get fed well, made sure that before she enjoyed her orange, her friend had some too. I’ve learned a lot of things while in Africa- I’ve seen and experienced so...
