Mzungu? yes i know…

I am a mzungu. I have been reassured of this fact hundreds of times in my time so far in Uganda. Everywhere we go we are called mzungus over and over. I love it. Sometimes I will call the locals mzungus because I love the confused look they give :). So Uganda has been a blessing so far as we begin to look at our final week before moving on to Kenya. The pastor and family we are staying with are so kind. They make us way too much food, wash our clothes, and are kind every minute of every day. It is fun to engage in tickle fights with the two little girls Rachel and Debra at the end of the...

Renewing my Passion

This is what I was made to do as the children saw in unison “Good Morning Teacher Jarah” my heart melts. The last week I’ve had the opportunity to teach in a primary school. The joy that I feel walking into those classrooms is overwhelming. I could feel God using the talents that he has given me to bless these beautiful children. I was who God made me to be standing in front of 40 shining black faces. I feel in love with them instantly and can still hear theyre sweet little voices repeating every English word I say. They are so eager to learn even when theyre using broken...

Forever and For Always

I’m keeping you forever and for always We will be together all of our days Want to wake up every morning to your sweet face Always. -Shania Twain We hear this song almost EVERY day here in Bunamwaya, Uganda. It is a strange techno version of the song, but the message is the same. It is a sweet reminder of home and also a reminder of the heart of God. Through teaching at school, going to church, and walking through the small town that we live in, we have seen so many of these sweet faces. It is so beautiful to know that this is the Lord’s desire for us, that we would...

schooling in a Father’s love

Our ministry here in Uganda so far has involved a lot of teaching in schools (the two main schools we’ve visited are connected to our contact’s church).  It’s been an unexpected blessing and learning curve for me.   When we arrive at a school, we spread out among the classes, one or two of us per room depending on the size of the school and the age of the kids.  We basically teach whatever the kids are learning that day, especially English classes.  I’ve been surprised to find I apparently have a real heart for the Primary 1 group –...

Supremacy

Our host home is beautiful and cozy, but not exactly spacious.  We all cram into the family room to have some time together at nights which is wonderful and necessary, but I am a huge ball of sweat at the end.  One night I just needed to get some fresh air and some peace, so I went out into the little compound thing to just sit.  It was dark out and the stars were shining.  I look up at the expanse of the sky and just ask the Lord to bring peace to my stirring soul.  I was simply just trying to rest in the Lord, but I was being distracted.  The house next door...

Freedom is Beauty

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and  do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 Uganda is a land like no other that I have ever set foot on.  With that said, I love it.         I have been in a season in my life where I have needed freedom from an abundance of things. Spiritual freedom. Physical freedom. Emotional freedom. Uganda is a land – a nation – that is in desperate need of freedom. So, to say the least, we have gotten along pretty well. Just as my heart...
