The past month living with the Maasai way out in the bush of Kenya was an experience I will never forget! We had such an adventure. We were blessed with getting to become part of many wonderful families. Most of which had the last name Meshami… Everywhere you went, another Meshami!
We learned the ways of how the Maasai tribe lives. We got to experience a Maasai wedding and unfortunately but fortunately a funeral. The funeral, although we didn’t know the woman who it was for, was hard because it was our mama’s sister. To see mama Agnus hurt that way was awful! But getting to be apart of both those events was so cool!
We became one big family there. We became Maasai mzungus! 😉 We lived in a land of never ending chai, chapatti, cabbage, rice, and potatoes. We crammed into tiny vehicles many times with about 10 others (don’t forget, alone there’s 14 of us!) We saw ALMOST every famous african animal but, “someone took the lions!” Our skin is getting torn apart from scratching what our little flea friends left behind. I will have the same campfire or tent experiences I had in the bush, and who knew you could learn so much from goats!
Besides all the never ending stories and lifelong memories, the work God did in us and through us was incredible. God walked ahead of us, behind us, and with us every long walk we had day to day going to the huts. The Maasai people are the most generous and accepting people I know. The way they opened their hearts to Gods word was so encouraging. They all had so little but had more joy than I’ve seen in a long time. The kids surround you with love even though even though most of them have never felt real love from anyone. My eyes were opened to so many things that God wants to change in me, one of those many things is being more grateful! Even down to loving toilets! A fly filled squatty isn’t the funnest on a blazing hot afternoon.
God knew what He was doing when He picked the girls for this team. So far we have found joy in all the challenges and times most people would want to pack up and go home. But the talents God blessed each of us with compliment each other and make us a unit that God I know is proud to use to further His Kingdom! I am so thankful for the 13 kinadadas God blessed my life with. We so quickly became a family and I love them all so much!
I thank God for providing the people that supported me so that I could take the opportunity God set before me. He has blessed me so much and is using this to bring me closer to Him. “God is good all the time. All the time God is good!”
I am so glad we’ve only been here a month, we have so much waiting for us. I cannot wait to see what God has planned!
Olaserdae! (Maasai for: “see you later!”)
