You must be in de-NILE

You see what I did there? It’s funny because I am in Africa.

Well once we finally made it here things really started
happening. I wasn’t sure what to expect or if I should be expecting anything at
all. After training camp I learned that this experience would be so much
greater if I let my selfish wants and expectations go out the window and let
God do work. And so far this has been the most amazing journey.

I have discovered that I LOVE Africa time and I LOVE not
knowing. It adds to the thrill of it all. Let me just inform you about Africa
time. When someone says that they will be here at 9 it really means more like
9:45. And when you finally get to your meeting point you can expect another delay
of about 30 minutes as people just socialize and discuss the events of the day.
Time is just a guideline and not a requirement or strictly enforced by any
means.

When we arrived in Uganda we stayed in this hostel thingy
and stayed in tents that night. That is when our leaders announced to us that
we were going to go white water rafting on the Nile River the next day. Um,
what? The NILE? Like Moses and the Nile? Yeah. It was awesome. Well actually
better than that. When you think of Africa you think about plains and savannah
grass and lions. Not Uganda. It is so beautiful and lush and green, but so so
dusty. But live here is simple and beautiful.

It reminds me of this passage in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 where
Paul is talking about wisdom. He calls us to REMEMBER the simplicity of the
wisdom that the Lord gives us in his Gospel and to RECOGNIZE the power of God’s
word. I can so see this truth in Uganda. There is simplicity in the lifestyle
but there is power in the beauty of the country and its people. It takes my
breath away everyday.
