simplicity.

Well, I could spend hours telling you all about the dirt, goats and vivid colors of living with the Maasai people, but I'll skip straight to the substantial stuff 😉 The Kenyan Bush (Tiamamut village, to be exact) let me see the things I wouldn't admit to myself…the ways I told God to pipe down and let me live my life. Writing it makes me feel so immature and foolish, which I most certainly was, but during the living it was not so clear. Out here, God is everything. He always was, I just didn't notice so much. That doesn't mean that every moment we are in dire...

God and a Guitar

For the past 12 or so hours I have written and re-written every event that has happened over the past month, but to be honest at this moment none of those events matter in my heart. The one thing that keeps ringing throughout my head is that God is so so good. One of the many things I absolutely love about my team is that when it's needed most all we ever have really needed is God and a guitar. Tonight as our last night in the hostel comes to an end all we had was God and the guitar. We could have been singing any random song, maybe even "Before he cheats" by Carrie...

Little summary of a Kenya Experience

So it's been a month…..in the wilderness of Kenya. And let me tell you it's been a learning experience already- from learning how to master the squatty to giving words of encouragement to strangers. As difficult as its been at times I wouldn't trade a second in Kenya for the world.  The joy and hearts of the Kenyan people are impossible to describe. It's so inspiring to witness the great joy and peace these people get from leading such simple lives. I feel incredibly blessed to have lived with the Maasai tribe for a month. WHO does that?! We did.    ...

Ministry in the Marketplace

God has been humbling me in so many ways. My faith has been stretched and my life has been changed. Joy, peace and freedom continually overwhelm me and I feel the Holy Spirit moving in and through me. Perhaps the most humbling and joyful experience that I have had happened at the marketplace. The team had walked five kilometers to go to the flea-market and it was a wonderful experience being able to walk around and see the African way of shopping. By the afternoon I was ready to head back to our team meeting spot. As I approached where the team was sitting under the shade of a tree I...

The Beauty of Simplicity

"Nikki, Nikki get up Nikki, come seee the elephants." My First morning in the Bush of Kenya, I woke up to one of the sweetest girls outside my tent waiting for me to get up and see the elephants. Freeda is one of the daughters of our host family living in the bush. I fell in love with her the first night we met. Although I only spent a few days with her since she had to go off to school for 3 months, I learned a lot from this girl. She had the most precious smile and had the sweetest personality that brought joy to everyone she met. Freeda is just one of the many children here in...

No Place I’d Rather Be

September 04, 2012 Something I love about living way out in the bush of Kenya is spending the entire evening around the campfire.  Just the 14 of us, and our Massai brothers and sisters.  Every single night. Tonight is especially beautiful.  Pitch black and cuddled around the fire with everyone, bright stars completely covering the wide African sky, worshipping our God a cappela in the Massai language. I love the unique way they dance, and how they laugh endearingly when we try our best to imitate. I love these people. I love this place… I love the sense of unity I...
