take me home with you

Our first day at Ntabas care point a little girl runs up to me, clings to my legs and looks up at me. The sadness in her eyes broke my heart.   The children who come to these carepoints are typically orphans. Some are 7,8,9 years old (maybe younger, maybe older) who run the household, or have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic here in Swaziland.   We start working with the children around 10am  teaching them songs, dances, games etc. Loving on these kids might be the only attention the get in a day. The meal that they receive here for lunch at these carepoints might be the...

Have my daughter.

“I want you to have her,” said the 21 year old mother. What? I must have heard her wrong. Have her daughter?     I met a beautiful young woman, Deti, and her gorgeous 2 year old daughter the other day. After I found out her name she instantly asked how old I was. At first I was confused but once I told her I was 20 she said, “I want you to have her.” “What?” I responded. “I want you to have her.” “Why?” I responded. “Because I can’t feed her; I have no money.”   My heart broke into a million...

Bold. Vulnerable. Unashamed.

Alone time is a rarity here in Mozambique. Our living quarters consist of tents crammed in a small yard and a room where everyone congregates for meals, team time, and many games of Monopoly. There are always children from the neighborhood in our yard who constantly want to be played with and locals playing keyboard on the front porch.   One day when I was desperately craving alone time, I made my way to the front of our yard with my journal and colored pencils in hand. The plan was to relax, hang out with Jesus, and draw. As I got out the colored pencils and began to slip into...

The Eyes of Men

Mud covered roads, and exhaust pouring into our lungs. This is the Manzini bus stop. A chaotic mass of people surround me. All eyes on “The Americans”. My team moved through the dense crowd.  The locals stopped what they were doing to stare at us. They pointed and laughed at us. They would push and shove us as we walked past. Men, with lustful eyes scanned my body. If I even slightly looked at these men in the eyes, they would spit vulgarities at me. They would scream, “I want you!” and reach out to touch me. Others would ask, “How much for this beautiful...

Community

On this trip I have realized that there are many aspects of the American church that are not as strong as they should be. One of these things that the church is lacking is the sense of community. Yes churches do have community, but do they truly have the community that they should have, the community that the Bible talks about? If you have read Acts, you know what community I am talking about. In Acts 2:42-47 it says,         All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the...

I Am Not Enough.

I am not enough for Africa. I am not enough for Mozambique. I am not enough for Maputo. And that’s alright, because I don’t have to be. Because Jesus Christ is enough.   This is something that God is in the long process of teaching me, and it really hit me today. Brittany and I had been playing with two sweet little girls in our ministry contact’s yard. We were playing with Britt’s guitar and the soccer and as I was watching them play, I noticed that their clothes were falling apart at the seams. The older girl, who is probably about 6, had a couple hang nails...
