Enough

Do you love yourself?Truly love yourself? Until recently, I never did. I mean, I was fine with who I was, but I didn’t truly love who I was. The world always gives you the message that you are not enough. Whether it be from media, your friends, your family, yourself, etc. everyone seems to receive that message. You are not smart enough. You are not athletic enough. You are not talented enough. You are not skinny enough. You are not pretty enough. The list goes on and on about our “shortcomings.” We keep on striving and trying to “be enough.” We focus so much...

take me home with you

Our first day at Ntabas care point a little girl runs up to me, clings to my legs and looks up at me. The sadness in her eyes broke my heart.   The children who come to these carepoints are typically orphans. Some are 7,8,9 years old (maybe younger, maybe older) who run the household, or have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic here in Swaziland.   We start working with the children around 10am  teaching them songs, dances, games etc. Loving on these kids might be the only attention the get in a day. The meal that they receive here for lunch at these carepoints might be the...

Oranges and Community

I was eating an orange outside in Mozambique, while two little girls were playing around me and I felt like I should give them some. I handed one little girl a piece and she immediately walked over to her friend and motioned for me to give her a piece, because if she got a piece and her friend didn’t that just wouldn’t be fair. This little girl who has nothing to call her own, and who probably doesn’t get fed well, made sure that before she enjoyed her orange, her friend had some too. I’ve learned a lot of things while in Africa- I’ve seen and experienced so...

The Eyes of Men

Mud covered roads, and exhaust pouring into our lungs. This is the Manzini bus stop. A chaotic mass of people surround me. All eyes on “The Americans”. My team moved through the dense crowd.  The locals stopped what they were doing to stare at us. They pointed and laughed at us. They would push and shove us as we walked past. Men, with lustful eyes scanned my body. If I even slightly looked at these men in the eyes, they would spit vulgarities at me. They would scream, “I want you!” and reach out to touch me. Others would ask, “How much for this beautiful...

Community

On this trip I have realized that there are many aspects of the American church that are not as strong as they should be. One of these things that the church is lacking is the sense of community. Yes churches do have community, but do they truly have the community that they should have, the community that the Bible talks about? If you have read Acts, you know what community I am talking about. In Acts 2:42-47 it says,         All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the...

Show the Jesus Film, preach the gospel, and heal the sick.

Last month in Mozambique we stayed with a pastor named Filito Utuie. He was a man who was clearly anointed by God and Filito was blessed with many spiritual gifts. He told us a story of when he went to a Muslim village in northern Mozambique and wanted to share the love of Jesus there. He told the chief of the village he wanted to show the Jesus film, preach the gospel, and heal the sick. The chief didn’t care too much for the first two things he said, but once Filito said “heal the sick”, the chiefs eyes got a little bit wider. After the film and a powerful message, the...
