The Jesus of KFC

Our team sat, eating our dinner at KFC in downtown Maputo. We all talked and laughed away, enjoying our free day. Sitting outside were a bunch of street kids peering through the window; they wanted our food. We had been told not to give money or food away because it could hurt more than help the needy here. The attendant chased them off the property and slung some colorful Portuguese words around. These kids were loud and rambunctious, troublemakers most likely. I noticed one with crossed-eyes looking utterly...

Community

On this trip I have realized that there are many aspects of the American church that are not as strong as they should be. One of these things that the church is lacking is the sense of community. Yes churches do have community, but do they truly have the community that they should have, the community that the Bible talks about? If you have read Acts, you know what community I am talking about. In Acts 2:42-47 it says,         All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the...

I Am Not Enough.

I am not enough for Africa. I am not enough for Mozambique. I am not enough for Maputo. And that’s alright, because I don’t have to be. Because Jesus Christ is enough.   This is something that God is in the long process of teaching me, and it really hit me today. Brittany and I had been playing with two sweet little girls in our ministry contact’s yard. We were playing with Britt’s guitar and the soccer and as I was watching them play, I noticed that their clothes were falling apart at the seams. The older girl, who is probably about 6, had a couple hang nails...

The Ugliest Word I Know

Ugly. Today I sat with three little girls who must have said that word at least twenty times. I never realized how much I despise the mere existence of that word until today. Four letters that have taken a painful blow on the self esteems of countless little girls. As I sat on the play ground with three beautiful young Swazi girls, my heart broke every time that word slipped out of their little mouths. They ranged from the ages of ten to fourteen and had come to the care point for a meal of beans and porridge after a long day at school. As they twisted our hair in their little fingers and...

Theres a Man here who wears a skirt…

Salamao was in the third grade and only 15 years old when became an alcoholic. He dropped out of school to work and support his addiction, only to get fired soon after from stealing and drinking on the job. Two pastors took him in to try and help him get on his feet. He stole from both of them, sold all of their stuff, and even burned down one of their houses. He sold all of his mothers furniture and borrowed from friends. He went after women for comfort. He had realized the turmoil alcohol created in his life. He quit once or twice, and relapsed multiple times. After years of a constant...

I’m not coming home

I am Ally White I once lacked confidence in the girl I saw myself as. I now rest firmly in the fact that I am a powerful woman of God, a daughter of the most high King. I once was blinded by the works of the Holy Spirit in my spiritual life. I now am constantly being filled by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ. I once was timid, never knowing where I was being led. I am now a roaring lion, who’s confidence is from The Lord. I once held onto my life with everything I had. I now left my old life and have fully surrendered my future to the Almighty. I once was shy in...
