BOOM!!!

So Africa is amazing! We have all grown so much. We’ve grown closer to each other but most of all closer to God. We’ve seen a  woman who was paralyzed in her right arm for two years start to move her fingers. We’ve seen several people ask to have Christ come into their lives. We’ve seen all these amazing things, but I feel like we were called here for more. I feel like God is going to do some earth shaking, life changing, city shaping stuff (hence the title). And I feel like He wants to do it through us. The only question is, are we ready? Am I ready? I...

Freedom is Beauty

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and  do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 Uganda is a land like no other that I have ever set foot on.  With that said, I love it.         I have been in a season in my life where I have needed freedom from an abundance of things. Spiritual freedom. Physical freedom. Emotional freedom. Uganda is a land – a nation – that is in desperate need of freedom. So, to say the least, we have gotten along pretty well. Just as my heart...

An African Hymn

Every night we prepare our hearts for bed by singing an African hymn that starts off, “We thank you, Lord we thank you.” I stand most nights with my arms open, wondering what in the world to be thankful for. Immediately my mind goes to the dreadful experiences here in Mbarara, Uganda: A rash that continually spreads down my arms, mosquito bites that cover my body (including one in the middle of my forehead), and an unbearable toothache that would have been fixed a week ago in the States. In the midst of my complaints, the Lord waits patiently on me. He then begins to remind me...

Mzungu? yes i know…

I am a mzungu. I have been reassured of this fact hundreds of times in my time so far in Uganda. Everywhere we go we are called mzungus over and over. I love it. Sometimes I will call the locals mzungus because I love the confused look they give :). So Uganda has been a blessing so far as we begin to look at our final week before moving on to Kenya. The pastor and family we are staying with are so kind. They make us way too much food, wash our clothes, and are kind every minute of every day. It is fun to engage in tickle fights with the two little girls Rachel and Debra at the end of the...

It’s difficult to explain…

It is difficult to explain the experiences that I have had on this trip thus far. It is difficult to explain how I have seen our Almighty God move. It is difficult to explain the times of joy, sorrow, and every other emotion in the book that I have felt. It is difficult to explain a 24 hour plane ride followed by a night of camping, into an all day excursion on the Nile, into another 10 hour bus ride. It is difficult to explain exactly how each and every one of these students I am leading have grown and stepped into their identities in Christ. It is difficult to explain how Tommy has felt...

Renewing my Passion

This is what I was made to do as the children saw in unison “Good Morning Teacher Jarah” my heart melts. The last week I’ve had the opportunity to teach in a primary school. The joy that I feel walking into those classrooms is overwhelming. I could feel God using the talents that he has given me to bless these beautiful children. I was who God made me to be standing in front of 40 shining black faces. I feel in love with them instantly and can still hear theyre sweet little voices repeating every English word I say. They are so eager to learn even when theyre using broken...
