Seed to Blossom

Here I am. My last time in this very internet cafe. My last time in this town, in fact. My last time eating at TLT, our favorite Ugandan restaurant. It’s time to move on. Time to let go. Let go of the hands I’d been holding onto these past weeks in this now familiar country.  Everything seems to be changing before my eyes! It’s as if I’ve seen a flower’s life cycle from seed to blossom. The puppies that were once small enough to be held two at a time in each of my hands now stretch to half the length of my forearm. The children that once showed an...

Simple Adventures

Storytime! First, some background: a lot of people in Uganda ride around on bicycles. But they’re really tall. And they have a second, shorter seat in the back. The other night I was chilling with some kids, and one of them had his bike with him. He asked me if I wanted to ride it and I was up for the challenge. Since so many things are different in Africa sometimes I feel helpless, because they have different ways of doing things. But a bike, I could rock at riding that thing.   So I hop on full of confidence. And my feet don’t reach the pedals. and I start rolling....

The Rains in Africa

The other day I was sitting in the overbearing Ugandan sun, fighting the discomfort of the blistering asphalt, and was wondering, with a slight edge, why God had sent me to Africa.  Within moments, the air began to cool and dark clouds began to crowd the sky.  The rain that followed was short and light.  However, the few drops that blessed my skin surged in me a new hope and purpose.  I heard God say that the state of desperation that holds Uganda is as stifling as the hot sun that pours over this land.  The country needs hope.  The country needs to be...

Uganda Beauty

The past month in Uganda has come with a variety of exciting experiences, twists, ups, downs, God moments, and just plain beauty. The stars at night shine brighter then I have ever seen. The sunrises during our morning runs, and the sunsets at night are always a display of God’s artwork. My heart is with these children here, who will chase our car as it goes by, and who yell Muzungu! The people who we have met have astounded me with their faith, God is who they hold onto in all times of hardship. Hardship. Something that I thought I had some sort of idea of before coming here, but...

He is LOVE.

When faced with the reality of how little I can do for this country, I feel inadequate. I feel useless. I feel as though I’m not enough. And yet, I know even the smallest thing I do for the wounded hearts of Uganda, I do for Him.        I have the unshakable confidence that comes from faith to push me forward. I believe He sees me. I believe He gives my weak and tired hands new life. His Life. And with that, all things are possible.       So, I have made a resolution never to consider whether the...

Which way to go?

Go before me. Prepare the way. Sometimes door to door ministry can be stressful. Sometimes the language barrier causes communication confusion. This is actually the case most of the time. Other times you get caught in the circle of excuses. I am catholic, my husband will beat me, it is not my time. All of these are disheartening reasons because from the outside you know what they need, what you want them so much to have, the experience that gets you through the day and the reason you get up in the morning. You want them to know and experience the goodness, the mercy and the never ending...
